WESLEY FELLOWSHIP EVENTS DURING 2008

The Spring meeting of the Wesley Fellowship was held on Saturday 19 April 2008 at Zion Church of the Nazarene, Brearley Street, Handsworth, Birmingham, B21 0JJ.  Again we thank the pastor, the Revd Fred Calvert, and members of the church, for their hospitality and providing drinks.  The day began informally with arrivals from 10.30am ready for a formal and prompt start at 11.00am.  The meeting ended by 3.30pm. This was the second time that the Wesley Fellowship and the League of Prayer had held a joint meeting (the first occasion being in November 2007 at the same venue).  These joint meetings have proved to be most enjoyable and well-attended times of united fellowship - little wonder, perhaps, when it is remembered that both groups are enthusiastically committed to Wesleyan doctrine and experience!

The morning session was led by Revd Dr Herbert McGonigle, Chairman of The Wesley Fellowship.  He introduced Mr Paul S. Taylor, M.A., Executive Member of the Wesley Fellowship, who presented a Paper entitled ‘An Introduction to the Life and Work of James Montgomery’.  Paul is an enthusiastic researcher into this remarkable Christian hymnologist and poet with Moravian, Methodist, and Anglican associations.  Montgomery had connections with Scotland, Ulster, and England (particularly Yorkshire), and, amongst other activities, was a newspaper editor whose supposedly ‘seditious’ views landed him in prison more than once, but who ended his long life as a Christian hero - and literally put the whole of his adopted Sheffield into mourning at his death in 1854…Paul’s paper was very well received and the meeting was pleased to learn that his Paper was a kind of ‘taster’ for a book on the same subject on which he is working on at present and hopes to see published in the not too distant future.

Following a break for (our own packed) lunch, the afternoon session was led by Major Norman Armistead, Director of The League of Prayer.  He introduced the preacher, the Revd T. Barry Hall, Th.B., Secretary of the Church of the Nazarene British Isles South District, and Pastor of the Weston-super-Mare Church of the Nazarene, who had been invited by the League of Prayer to preach a sermon for this second joint meeting of the League of Prayer and the Wesley Fellowship.

Spring 2009 Meeting of the Wesley Fellowship

This will be held on Saturday 25 April 2009 at Zion Church of the Nazarene, Brearley Street, Handsworth, Birmingham, B21 0JJ.  The day will begin informally with arrivals from 10.30am, ready for a formal and prompt start at 11.00am.  The meeting will end by 3.30pm. It will be a meeting held jointly with The League of Prayer.

During the morning session, Dr Geordan Hammond will present a paper on ‘John Wesley in Georgia’.  Following a break for (our own packed) lunch, the afternoon session will take the form of a preaching service during which the Revd Allan Longworth, MA, has been invited by the League of Prayer to preach a sermon on the theme of Christian holiness.
All members and friends, and new visitors, are warmly invited to attend this meeting

Autumn 2009 Meeting of the Wesley Fellowship

Our regular Wesley Fellowship meeting this autumn will take the form of a residential conference (jointly organised with The League of Prayer) with the title and theme of ‘The Wesleys: The Word and the Spirit’.

The Conference will be held in conjunction with The League of Prayer from late afternoon on Wednesday 4 November to early afternoon on Friday 6 November 2009.  The venue is The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire, DE55 1AU.
For the Conference, the League of Prayer has invited the Revd Douglas Crossman to preach, and the Wesley Fellowship has invited a number of its own members, including its Chairman, the Revd Dr Herbert McGonigle, to each deliver a paper related to the Conference theme.  Apart from time for discussion and fellowship, the planned programme also includes daily devotional sessions and a Love Feast.

The accommodation offers full board, and rooms with en-suite facilities. Further details and Booking Forms (including arrangements for Day visitors to the Conference) can be obtained from, and returned to, the Conference Registrar, Mr Alistair Barclay, 10A, Barnet Road, Sheffield, S11 7RP.
